I certainly concur with your assertion personally I am meditating since about 1972 and experienced major benefits from the practice.

Bhudda Shakyamuni "invent" meditation for freeing people from suffering. And it is the main "benefit" from meditation. It calls Vipassiana.
Than student and admirers "developed" Bhudda. We have many other ways now. It is good for practical use. Thus we may have "rest", take of stress, and (or) even change our characters and body.
